Brancacci Chapel

The Brancacci Chapel is located inside the church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence.

It is ideal to admire one of the pieces of history of Renaissance painting. The styles of Masolino, Masaccio and Filippino Lippi alternate and the visitor can admire the changes of style over almost a century.

The frescoes in the chapel were commissioned in 1424 by Felice Brancacci and illustrate the life of Saint Peter.

The church was almost entirely destroyed by a fire in 1771 from which only the Brancacci Chapel and the Corsini Chapel were saved.
In reality these two chapels were also damaged by the heat of the fire that saturated the colors. It was thought that those were the original colors and the chapel for many years was not appreciated enough.
In 1932, thanks to the art historian Ugo Procacci, a part of the fresco was found that had not been affected by the fire and it was understood that the original colors were brighter. Restoration work began and the Chapel was restored to its original beauty.
